Biffa Fiber Optical Upgrade

Location: Edmonton, North London
Country: GB
Project Type: Upgrade

Biffa, based in Edmonton North London, has been servicing the waste management needs of the UK since 1912 and are now a leading integrated waste management company in the country.

The Challenge

Turmec’s challenge was to increase the paper purity levels and recovery rates while decreasing manual labour.

Biffa had 3 lines of paper separation split into 6 picking lines, with too much manual sorting involved and low-quality paper. Turmec would have to install the proposed upgrade maintaining the plant in full operation.

THE SOLUTION

Turmec’s solution involved installing 5 Optical separators to both decrease manual picking and increase paper purity, so the recovered paper would only pass through a picking station for quality control, before baling.

The installation had to be carried out around existing works and was completed in the annual maintenance shutdown period, so the client wouldn’t have any downtime in operations.

OUTCOME

Turmec’s upgrade was delivered on time and budget; the 6 weeks installation was successfully carried out around existing works and was completed in the annual maintenance shutdown period, so no additional downtime was needed for the integration.

The client immediately saw a significant reduction in manual labour as well as increased recovery and decreased contamination – up to 99% purity.
